Socials - Your Guide To All Things Fun

  • One of the most active & vocal clubs on an AU Wednesday Night.
  • Multiple winners of the AU Watering Can - both for excessive drinking in "My Day" and recently just for turning up on an AU night
  • Never a dull night out  thanks to the dedicated Social Secretary
  • Easy to find fellow members by their distinctive club shirts.

Hutbc pride themselves on the quality of the socials. Be it a regular wednesday night in the Jonney Mac or Pub Golf along Beverly Road, your guaranteed a great night out.

Nights Out

As well as regular wednesday nights at the Jonnny Mac we also have a number of special social nights throughout the year.

Pub Golf
The best night out ever!! A trip down Bev Road, where we drink a drink in every pub. Each drink has a par, just like every hole in golf. The lowest score at the end wins a prize at bowling the week after. Only filled in and signed scorecards count and all cards must be handed in before bowling the week after to be included. It’s a mix of different drinks that really gets you drunk and its possible to do it all in one!

Pub Darts
A get drunk quick night in the Johnny Mac. Every drink has a value and the idea is to get to 301 individual or 501 in pairs as soon as possible without chundering to win. Normally there are 2 methods. One where you drink pints all the way then finish on a shot and the other where you drink crazy mixed drinks such as bowling greens and other dirty pints.

Centurions Challenge
Simply 100 shots in 100 minutes (shots of beer that is) Nobody may leave the table once the challenge has started. This is normally a good way to start a very, very drunken night again in the Johnny Mac.

Pub Olympics
A new one, tried out last year where Olympic events are changed into drinking matches between 2 or more teams depending on numbers. Quite a costly night, but a good one. For example, relay race: the 2 teams line up, one by one they run to the bar buy a drink run back down it, put the empty glass on their head then tag the next person. Hurdles, involves 2 people selected from each team going head to head in a race to drink a pint then eat crisps then drink a pint then eat crisps then finish with a sprint to the bar for 1 final drink.

Themed Socials
Occasionally the Uni will have themed nights where people dress up, we try to make the effort on these nights as much as possible. Also we have our own nights, including the summer social in winter, the pink social near Valentines Day, Work Wear, with each person wearing a uniform from a previous job.

Old Boys Social
Where all the old members of the club can come and show the newbie's just how its done!!

Xmas Party
With bowling and drinking in the afternoon then a Christmas meal followed by more drinking and games well into the early hours!

Drinking by Cards
A new one to be tried out, all the cards relate to a drink eg 2 of hearts is 1 shot sambucca. Everyone gets a card when they want a drink. Simple

Non Bowling Social Events

We also organise other events when we don't feel like bowling

  • Football
  • Poker Nights
  • Bonfire Night Party
  • Trip to Hull Fair
  • Eurovision Party

HUTBC Song

This is sung whenever anyone has to drink a whole pint.

Why was he born to beautiful,
Why was he born at all,
He’s no fucking use to anyone,
He’s no fucking use at all,
He should be permanently shat on,
He should be perfectly shot BANG BANG,
He should be hung from the gallows,
And left there to jolly well rot.

**Continues to months then days if the person is a slow downer!!

Drinking Games

HUTBC has a number of different drinking games we play

Just a quick note on the games we play normally at the socials. They sound complicated but they are really fun!! They are designed to get you as drunk as possible, in the true HUTBC way!!

Normally these games are played from 7pm in the Johnny Mac.
There are many other rules which can be introduced through the night, either by The Social Secretary (Soc Sec),The President (El Pres) or the Vice President!
However the Soc Secs word is final.

Standard drinking fines are 2 fingers! NO EXCEPTIONS!!! Remember though the important thing is that we get drunk and have fun!!

  • Matchbox
Spin the matchbox from under the table over your pint, landing it flat = 0 fingers, However if the matchbox already has fines on it when passed to you, you drink the fines straight away! Landing it on the large side = 2 fingers and landing it on its small side = 4 fingers all for the next person. Fines are cumulative until someone fails to land with the max fine being 16 fingers for non-committee and 20 fingers for committee members.

Later in the night, Hard-Core Matchbox may occur, In this an empty Skiv is placed in the middleand players try to land it in this, if the player is successful they nominate anyone they like to finish their drink. However, if they matchbox lands in someones pint then the thrower must drink it and buy the victim a new pint. Also, if the matchbox does not land on the table they must drink 2 fingers.
  • Ye Haa
A bowling favorite. Players sit in the circle and pass on the movements with various hand signals. YeeHaa passes it on to the next person. Ho-Down, reverses it back to where it came. Cow Girl skips the person next to the cowgirler. Get down little doggy, moves it to the person you point to! Ride ‘em cowboys means everyone stands up last one to do so drinks! *This can only be done by committee members. Fines are the standard 2 fingers for mistakes.

Theres many variations, Original YeeHaa (as described above) As well as “Camp YeeHaa”, “Religious YeeHaa” and even “Formula 1 YeeHaa”
  • Drink While You Think
As the title suggests you have to be drinking and thinking at the same time, something students should be good at! A subject will be decided and then it’ll go round the circle with people drinking while they think of the next thing. For example, If playing famous people, You could say: Tony Blair, the next person raises their drink starts drinking and then answers with a name of a famous person beginnning with B eg Bobby Moore. So on and So on, double letters eg Donald Duck reverse the play backwards.
  • 21’s
21’s is a simple counting game, or is it?? All you have to do in the circle is count to 21 if you say 1 number play continues along, say 2 it skips the next person, and say 3 it reverses play. The person to say 21 must drink the standard fine, UNLESS they say it with another number, in which case a stupid fine is enforced of an extra 2 fingers (4 in total). Sometimes we play 21’s backward to see who is awake, same principle, just backwards!
  • Slap-Slap Clap-Clap
Everyone in the circle is given a number, on the slap slap if its your turn you slap your knees and say your number twice then when you clap you shout someone elses number, it then becomes their turn, anyone who breaks the rhythm drinks their fine.
  • Bunny’s
Bunnnys starts with Soc Sec shouting “Bunnys in the air” Someone must reply within 10 seconds "I got the bunny". The bunny means placing your hands on your head like a bunny rabbit. The persons either side of the bunny put one of their hands up depending on which side they are on. The bunny moves round by people dropping one hand or passing it across the table by pointing and dropping their bunny ears. If 2 people shout I got the bunny then they both drink 2 fingers. If nobody shouts within 10 seconds then the whole circle finishes their drinks. The person who messes up the bunny chain also drinks his/her fine.
  • One Frog
A phrase goes round the circle – “one frog jumped into the pond PLOP” Everyone says one word, with real emphasis on the PLOP! Once its got round once, it becomes “two frogs jumped into the pond PLOP” and so on until someone messes up, if the chain is broken after 5 frogs then the person who broke it may change one word to whatever he/she likes. There are also variations including “one bowler bowled a strike YEH!”
  • Fuzzy Duck
Someone kicks off by saying "fuzzy duck" to the person on their left. That person repeats the phrase and the process continues clockwise around the table until someone decides to say "Does he?". Now the direction of play is reversed and the phrase changed to "ducky fuzz". This continues around the table until someone says "Does he?" again, whereupon the direction changes and the phrase reverts to "fuzzy duck". The point of the game is to say it very fast. Anyone who pauses or gets the phrase wrong must drink two fingers. If anyone says "Does he?" twice in a row they incur the maximum fine and down the rest of their pint - there's nothing worse than a drinking game cheat.
  • Good’ay Bruce
Bruces fave game! Everyone’s called Bruce, and play starts with someone saying to the person on their left, “Good’ay Bruce” the next person says “Good’ay Bruce” back the first person now says “Say good’ay to Bruce, Bruce”whilst pointing at the 3rd person. Play continues until the chain is broken, the person who broke the chain drinks 2 fingers and becomes Sheila, Play continues with that person being Sheila not Bruce. After Sheila we move to other “Auzzie” names!
  • Ping Pang Pong
These 3 words can confuse anyone! Probably the most confusing game ever to grace the bowling circle. In order the phrase Ping Pang Pong is said by 3 people in a row, all 3 may point at someone else, but the only time it moves is on Pong when the person who pongs points at someone else who then starts the whole thing again with a Ping
  • I have NEVER!
Play goes round the circle with each person saying he or she has never done something. Ideally you pick something everyones done, this means everyone stands up and drinks except you! However, if nobody has done what you say I have never to, then you finish your drink off! A good one is “I have never bowled” obviously most people in the circle will have done, so they drink not you!! People can challenge others who they think are lying, however if they are not lying then the accuser drinks 4 fingers the accused finishes their drink off if they were lying!
  • Drink, Truth Or Dare
Everyone knows the rules to this, not played very often, but basically you choose to Drink (2fingers) Truth (Answer a question about your past asked by the person to your right) Dare (Do something ridiculous, as picked by the 3 people to your right)
  • Love, Like and Fantasize
Only the committee and a few clever people know the rules, so it’s a good one to catch freshers out with. Once you think you know the rules, ask a committee member, if you’re right don’t tell anyone, if you’re wrong then finish your drink for wasting the committees time! There are rules, and they are dead dead simple!
You can LOVE, LIKE or FANTASIZE about anything, but will you really??
  • Buzz-Fuzz
The first player says "one", the person on his left says "two", and so on clockwise around the table until a multiple of 7 is reached. At this stage the person says "buzz" rather than the number. To further muddy the waters, any number that's a multiple of five is replaced by "fuzz. If a number is a multiple of both seven and five (such as 35), it's a "buzz-fuzz".
If someone does it wrong, they must drink the forfeit. That player then restarts from the number at which they messed up.
  • The Vegetable Game
The object of the game is to speak without ever showing your teeth by hiding them with your lips curled over them. The game starts by each person choosing the name of a vegetable. That will be their call name. The first person to go will say their name twice then choose another person by saying their name twice. That person will then continue by saying their name twice and "calling" another person. For example First Person: “Broccoli, Broccoli calls Asparagus, Asparagus” Second Person: “Asparagus, Asparagus calls Lettuce, Lettuce” Usually people feel, sound and look so ridiculous trying to say their names that everyone starts laughing - thus showing their teeth - resulting in a drink fest. If you can laugh and still hide your teeth then you haven't had enough to drink beforehand.

Club Drinking Rules

We also have a few rules which can be introduced at any time during the night

    Mexican Wave
Only the Soc Sec or President or Vice President may start a Mexican wave and it can only be done twice a night. The starter raises his/her glass and says mexican wave followed by a direction. Everybody downs their drinks one after the other and remains standing.

    The Penny
The penny is placed in soneones drink the person must then stop the queen drowning. To do this they must down their drink as quick as possible whilst the rest of the circle stands and sings the National Anthem. This may only be done twice a night! The penny roles over for the next week if not used or used twice already!

    The Poses
Various poses exist within HUTBC, from the catalogue pose to the moose.
All of which are dead simple and make you look stupid!
The person who has the pose can use it at any point, the last person standing copying the pose drinks the forfeit. Most popular poses – Moose (Stood up with antlers and shout Moose really loud), Catalogue pose (Assume a pose as if you were modelling clothing), Chicken (as the moose only chicken noises instead)

    The Rule Of Thumb
The person who has the thumb descretely places it on the edge of the table everyone else follows suit as quickly as possible, the last person with their thumb on the table drinks!

    Boat Race
In teams race each other at downing pints either within the club or against other clubs.
